We have been looking at controversial artists in music – Stravinsky and Eminem. Yes, they are from completely different places and time, but they did the same thing – caused a ruckus! Was Eminem using irony to pass his message on? Was Stravinsky ahead of his time, or just making headlines? The big question is, is there a need for rebellion in the arts?

Think about it – Rock n’ roll was outrageous in the 50′s, now where are we? What do you imagine will be controversial art in the year 2020?
Ok, so the summative assessment; a debate on the necessity of rebellion in the arts was excellent. Some brilliant points were made including the need to express ourselves, the right to have beliefs and opinions, the difficulties of peer and media pressure and manipulation by advertising. The inclusion of parental advisory stickers and the need to police over the counter sales of inappropriate media, the sense of a time and place of everything, and that music is not limited to intentional viewing like a controversial art exhibition. Great stuff!
